Western Piedmont Foundation offers numerous scholarships to assist students with expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at WPCC.

Endowed Scholarships

 

Benner-Pharr Endowed Scholarship
To assist an Associate Degree in Science student in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing his/her academic goals in WPCC.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Full-time student in the Associate Degree in Science program
  • Completed at least 12 SHC at WPCC
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Burke County resident
  • Demonstrate financial need

Morganton Men’s Club Endowed Scholarship
To provide financial support to a Burke County Public School graduate enrolled at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Applicants must complete the College’s Scholarship Application form and submit to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline each year.
  • Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline each year.
  • Recipients will be selected by the College’s Financial Aid Subcommittee based on the completed application, personal essay, goals, honors, activities and any additional criteria.
  • Recipients must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress standards as determined by the College.
  • Recipients are expected to attend a scholarship recognition event honoring their achievements and Western Piedmont Foundation scholarship donors.

RECIPIENTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING DONOR CRITERIA

  • Be a graduate of a Burke County High School.
  • Be enrolled full time (minimum of 12 hours) in a Western Piedmont Community College Associate in Applied Science program or a diploma or certificate in one of the College’s AAS programs.
  • Preference will be given to a student enrolled in the Building Construction Technology program.

Morganton Service League Endowed Scholarship*
To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Applicants must complete the College’s Scholarship Application form and submit to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline each year.
  • Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline each year.
  • Recipients will be selected by the College’s Financial Aid Subcommittee based on the completed application, personal essay, goals, honors, activities and any additional criteria.
  • Recipients must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress standards as determined by the College.

Recipients are expected to attend a scholarship recognition event honoring their achievements and Western Piedmont Foundation scholarship donors.

RECIPIENTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING DONOR CRITERIA

  • Enrolled at least half-time in a Western Piedmont Community College program leading to a degree, diploma or certificate related to performing or visual arts or Professional Crafts.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by the College, and
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

Established to encourage employees of Breeden Holdings, Inc. and their dependents to continue their education at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Employee or dependent of employee of Breeden Holdings, Inc.

  • Have documented disabilities or be preparing for a career related to education or services for people with disabilities
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need

To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be a volunteer, paid or retired firefighter or be the spouse, child or step-child of a volunteer, paid or retired firefighter
  • Be enrolled at least half-time (6 semester hours) in a program leading to a degree or diploma
  • Show academic promise
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by the College
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need

Burke Education Endowment Program: Huffman-Cornwell, Richardson & Rostan Scholarships
To assist student(s) in meeting expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria

  • Graduate with a standard diploma from an accredited high school or state-approved private or home school located in Burke County
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the specified deadline before applying to BEEP
  • Complete the application process for admission to WPCC (placement tests, transcripts, etc.)
  • Enroll at WPCC as a degree or diploma seeking student within one year following high school graduation
  • Maintain a physical address in Burke County
  • Enroll full-time (minimum of 12 credit hours) each fall and spring semester (summer semester or semester of graduation may be less)
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 semester and cumulative grade point average and meet and maintain satisfactory academic progress as established by federal guidelines and WPCC
  • Students who do not qualify for in-state tuition will be funded for tuition and fees up to the in-state rates, if eligible, and will be personally responsible for the difference between the in-state and out-of-state rates
  • Other grants/scholarships received by a student will be used before BEEP funds are allocated

Carlton E. Caruso, Sr. Endowed Scholarship
To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be enrolled at least half-time (6 semester hours) in a curriculum program
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by the College
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need, plan to pursue a career in marketing/advertising and/or reside in Burke County

To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Ineligible for Pell Grant assistance but still demonstrates financial need
  • Completed 30 hours of credit toward the Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration or Office Administration
  • Preference will be given to either a veteran and/or a displaced worker who is seeking skills for a new career
  • Consideration will also be given to any applicant expressing a desire or goal to work in the insurance industry
  • Burke County Resident

Mary Ann Chou Achievement in Nursing Education Scholarship
To provide financial support to a WPCC nursing student pursing an Associate Degree in Nursing.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Successful completion of the first year of WPCC’s Associate Degree in Nursing program
  • Have the highest GPA among students completing the first year of WPCC’s Associate Degree in Nursing program
  • Demonstrate good standing in the community
  • Preference will be given to either a veteran and/or a displaced worker who is seeking skills for a new career

 

The student earning the Mary Ann Chou Achievement in Nursing Education Scholarship will be awarded during the annual WPCC Nursing Pinning Ceremony. As part of the presentation, a brief history/bio of Mary Ann Chou will be shared and a longer bio, including a message from the donor, will give to the recipient.

K. Harold Clark Scholarship
To provide financial support to a WPCC student pursuing a degree or career in education.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a graduate of a Burke County Public High School
  • Must have completed at least 24 credit hours toward an Associate in Science or an Associate in Arts
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as determined by the College
  • Preference will be given to a student pursuing an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education at WPCC or to a student who has expressed intentions to transfer to a four year college or university to earn an Education related bachelor’s degree

Larry R. Clark Endowed Scholarship
To provide a “financial safety net” for non-Pell eligible students pursuing an Associate in Arts/transfer degree with living expenses.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Ineligible for Pell Grant assistance but still demonstrates financial need
  • Be enrolled in the Associate in Arts transfer degree program
  • Must have completed at least 30 credit hours toward the transfer degree program
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA

Doug Cline Memorial Endowed Scholarship
To assist at least one* Associate Degree seeking student in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing his/her academic goals at WPCC.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Must be a full-time, second year student in any Associate Degree program. Student must demonstrate excellent academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.3
  • Demonstrate financial need by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid
  • Demonstrate that he or she is a serious student, committed to the value of education, with immediate plans to pursue further higher education
  • Scholarship will be awarded for one year
  • Scholarship monies to be used to cover tuition, fees, and books. Other legitimate educationally-related expenses may be covered, if funds permit, and upon application to and approval by the WPCC Financial Aid Subcommittee

Chad B. Cole Merit Endowed Scholarship
To assist Western Piedmont community College student(s) in meeting expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Must be a resident of the Drexel School District perimeter as determined by the Burke County Public School System map prepared May, 2001
  • Must have graduated from a Burke County Public School System high school with a GPA of 3.5 or above within the last two years and must have been a resident of Drexel School District during the last two or more years of high school
  • Recipient must utilize the award to attend any one of the public/private universities in North Carolina
  • Recipient must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the university to maintain scholarship eligibility
  • Scholarship funds to be used for payment of tuition, fees, books, and other legitimate educationally-related expenses

  • Be enrolled at least on a half-time basis in the Associate in Fine Arts: Art (A1020A), Associate in Arts: Art Education (A1010A), Professional Crafts: Clay (A30300), or Digital Effects & Animation Technology (A30130) curriculum programs
  • Demonstrate financial need

Grace Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Endowed Scholarship
To assist Associate Degree Nursing students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be enrolled full-time at Western Piedmont Community College in the Associate Degree Nursing program. Students must have completed all admission criteria for the ADN program at WPCC and been officially admitted to the ADN program before being eligible to apply, and must demonstrate good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrate good character and commitment to the ideals of nursing

To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time in a curriculum program
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must maintain satisfactory progress as determined by the College
  • Preference will be given to students who graduated high school in the top 20% of their class (based on grades and/or standardized test scores) and express interest in a science discipline

To provide financial support to a student pursuing an Associate’s degree at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Applicants must complete the College’s Scholarship Application form and submit to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline each year.
  • Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline each
    year.
  • Recipients will be selected by the College’s Financial Aid Subcommittee based on the completed application, personal essay, goals, honors, activities and any additional criteria.
  • Recipients must be enrolled in at least 6 semester hours (SHC) per semester.
  • Recipients must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress standards as determined by the College.
  • Recipients are expected to attend a scholarship recognition event honoring their achievements and Western Piedmont Foundation scholarship donors.

RECIPIENTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING DONOR CRITERIA

  • Preference given to a student who demonstrates financial need.
  • Student must remain in good academic standing.
  • Students must be enrolled at least 6 semester hours in an AA, AS, or AFA program.

Established to provide financial support to a Burke County Public School graduate enrolled at Western Piedmont Community College

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be a graduate of a Burke County High School
  • Enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 hours) in a Western Piedmont Community College program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate
  • Ineligible for Pell Grant assistance but still demonstrates financial need.
  • Preference will be given to a resident of Glen Alpine or Oak Hill communities.

Steve M. Hoyle Memorial Endowed Scholarship
To assist a student in the Criminal Justice program in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing his/her academic goals in WPCC.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Must be able to pass a Criminal justice background investigation
  • Four written references must be submitted: One from current Chief of Police of Valdese Police Department; One from the staff member of the Criminal Justice Department at WPCC; Two from persons of good moral character who know recipient and can attest to their good moral character
  • Recipient must submit to Western Piedmont Foundation and Valdese Police Department a letter of intent consisting of at least one page in length, typed, and signed stating how they plan to utilize their professional education in Criminal Justice

To assist student(s) in meeting expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Must be a resident of the Drexel School District perimeter as determined by the Burke County Public School System map prepared May 2001. A recipient who is a native of the Drexel School District and attended the Drexel Schools for four or more years but currently is residing with a divorced parent who due to employment or remarriage has moved to another school district will be regarded as a resident of the Drexel School District
  • Must have graduated from high school with a GPA of 3.0 and must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at WPCC to maintain scholarship eligibility

To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in the Nursing Program at WPCC

  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need
  • Recipients may apply for renewal of the scholarship for a second year

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at the College and already successfully completed the required Nursing Orientation course
  • Maintain satisfactory progress as determined by the College
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Recipients may apply for renewal of the scholarship for a second year

Elizabeth Hooper Jackson, M.D. Endowed Memorial Scholarship
To assist Allied Health curriculum students, Substance Abuse Technology students, and students majoring in Biology or Chemistry (college-transfer) in meeting expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at WPCC.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be a North Carolina resident
  • Be a North Carolina high school or GED graduate
  • Preference given to a female student
  • Must be a full-time student in the Allied Health curriculum program, Substance Abuse Technology program or a full-time student pursuing a Biology or Chemistry (college-transfer) major with the intent of entering a field of medicine. Student must demonstrate good academic standing as determined by the College
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Scholarship monies to be used to cover tuition, fees, and books. Other legitimate educationally related expenses may be covered, if funds permit

Naomi & Oval Jaynes, Sr. Endowed Nursing Scholarship
To assist at least three* Associate Degree Nursing students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at WPCC.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Preference to Burke County residents
  • Must be full-time students in the Associate Degree Nursing program. Students must have completed all admission criteria for AND program at WPCC before being eligible, and must demonstrate good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate good character and commitment to the ideals of nursing, with an interest in pursuing a career in hospital nursing
  • Scholarship will be awarded for one year. Recipients may reapply for consideration for a second year
  • Scholarship monies to be used to cover tuition, fees, and books. Other legitimate educationally-related expenses may be covered, if funds permit, and upon application to and approval by the WPCC Financial Aid Subcommittee

Jones-Pons Nursing Endowed Scholarship
To assist students in meeting educational expenses incurred while pursuing their academic goals at Western Piedmont Community College.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in the Nursing Program at WPCC
  • Demonstrate good academic standing and good character, which is defined as: 1)Moral, ethical, and spiritual values, 2)Compassion and empathy for all living creatures, 3)Dedication to putting the needs of others ahead of his/her own, 4)Calmness in times of crisis, 5)Desire to work hard academically and improve him/herself, and 6)Ability to work well with others and follow instructions
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need
  • Recipients may apply for renewal of the scholarship for a second year

  1. Preference will be given to students who are first generation college students.
  2. Applicants will be required to submit an essay on the History of Burke County mill workers.  The essay should illustrate that applicant understands the history of the mill worker’s life and how the local mill workers built our community. Essay prompt:  Please explain the history of the millworker workforce and how this workforce built the Burke County community.
  3. Recipient will be asked to volunteer as a docent to the History Museum of Burke County for student groups that tour the museum.  There will be tours in April, May, September and October.  The recipient will need to volunteer around 30 minutes four times per academic year (total of 2 hours of volunteer time).

Glover-Beeson CDA Scholarship*
To provide a scholarship award to a highly qualified recipient of Western Piedmont Community College’s Dental Assisting Program. The award is purposed to encourage further academic and professional achievement by reducing the cost of preparation and application to take the DANB CDA examination.

Scholarship Criteria
  • The Coordinator and Staff of the Dental Assisting Program will determine the student who receives this award.

RECIPIENTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA

  • Demonstrate high academic achievement among students completing the WPCC Dental Assisting Program.
  • Be of good character and standing in the community.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to the Dental Assisting profession with an expressed desire to become a Certified Dental Assistant
  • Present the DANB exam application and request for study materials to the Coordinator of the Dental Assisting Program by November 31 following WPCC Dental Assisting graduation.

 Loan Programs

 

Mull Student Emergency Loan Fund
To provide short-term loan funds to qualified students attending the College for assistance with payment of tuition, fees, and textbooks, as well as emergencies that would prevent a student from attending classes.

Criteria
  • Be enrolled at least on a half-time basis in any curriculum program
  • Demonstrate ability to repay the loan in the time specified
  • Complete promissory note and associated documentation required for selection

 

Phifer Allied Health Emergency Loan Fund
The Phifer Allied Health Emergency Loan Program (PAHELP) has been established to provide emergency financial assistance to students enrolled in an Allied Health Program at Western Piedmont Community College. PAHELP funds are to used only in extreme emergencies that would otherwise require the student to withdraw from the program. Funds are to be used only after all other sources (i.e. scholarships, Stafford Loans, Social Services, etc.) have been exhausted. Possible emergency situations include but are not limited to the following situations: Separation from or death of a spouse, loss of income, and loss of housing or transportation.

Details of Administration and Guidelines
  • Funds are to be used for Allied Health students who are in extreme financial difficulty (need)
  • Students should have completed two full semesters of their associate degree program, or one full semester of their diploma program, and have a high probability of graduating on time to be considered for funding
  • Students may request up to $1,500 in PAHELP funds during an academic year
  • Recipients of loans will be required to execute a promissory note with the Western Piedmont Foundation, Inc. before funds are disbursing
  • Loans will be issued interest free for one year. If the loan remains outstanding one year after graduation or withdrawal from the program, interest will accrue at 9% per year
  • 50% of a student’s loan will automatically be forgiven upon graduation from WPCC. (Note: The student must graduate on time.)
  • To apply for loan funds, a student must submit a written request to the Director of Financial Aid. The request should outline the student’s need for PAHELP Funds and how the funds will be used

Basic Skills Enhancement Fund
To provide enhancements for Basic Skills programs that supplement the resources provided by state and federal funds.
Burke Middle College Enhancement Fund
To provide funds to qualified Burke Middle College students for assistance with costs associated with textbooks, supplies, and fees required for their program of study. These expenses should be beyond the scope of what Burke Middle College normally provides.

Criteria
  • Be enrolled in Burke Middle College
  • Demonstrate financial need (ex. Qualify for free/reduced lunch benefits or present special circumstances)
  • Complete documentation required for selection
  • Return textbooks or materials after completion of related course (as appropriate). If the recipient fails to do so, Burke Middle College may require the recipient to pay for the items purchased with funds awarded

 

Jim W. Burnett Professional Development Fund
To provide professional development opportunities that can otherwise not be funded through county, state and federal funds.

Fund Guidelines
  • All full-time faculty and staff employed by the College are eligible to apply
  • Funds must be used to provide professional development opportunities directly related to the employees duties and responsibilities. Employees receiving support from this fund will provide a one-page summary of how their professional development experience will benefit them and the College. This report will be turned in no later than 30 days after the completion of the professional development activity
  • Funds will be used to support Western Piedmont Foundation’s annual Mini-Grant Program
  • Annual disbursements will be set by the Executive Director of the Western Piedmont Foundation based on the availability of funds

 

Digital Effects & Animation Technology Enhancement Fund
Student Assistance Program
To provide funds to students enrolled at the College for assistance with counseling services from external agencies.

Details of Administration
  • Recipient must be currently enrolled at Western Piedmont Community College
  • Referral form from a counselor must be submitted to the Dean of Student Services, who will share it with the Behavioral Intervention Team for review and approval
  • If approved by the Behavioral Intervention Team, the Dean of Student Services will submit request for funds to Western Piedmont Foundation
