Social and Human Services
Progress in your life, as you help others progress in theirs
Going out of your way to help others is a good thing, but choosing to make your career about helping others is a SPECIAL thing. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing you have made a positive impact on someone’s life. Here at Western Piedmont Community College, our Social and Human Services program can help you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to lead a career out of making those impacts on a regular basis. Skills such as crisis management, case management, intake and assessment, interviewing techniques, psychology, and sociology are just an example of the tools you will learn to use to help others progress in their lives.
So where can I work?
Everybody needs help at some point in their lives. Some people need more help than others, and some people don’t like to admit that they need help when they really do. This is where you come in. WPCC will prepare you for positions in institutions and agencies that provide both grass roots and systemic opportunities toward social, community, and educational empowerment and change. Job titles in this line of work include and are not limited to: social work assistant, care coordinator, community support specialist, case management aide, community outreach worker, etc.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the occupational outlook for human services assistants is projected to grow 13% from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations.

A Helping Hand for Those in Need
Drugs are everywhere. They are on the street, in our homes, and at the doctor’s office. It is a sad reality, but many people fall victim to drug abuse and have nobody to turn to for help. The WPCC Social and Human Services – Addiction and Recovery program prepares you with the skills necessary to help those individuals and become an influencing factor in their lives. WPCC was one of the first community colleges in the region to provide an Addiction and Recovery Associate in Applied Science degree concentration. This program has had time to mature into one of the most respected and established Recovery and Addiction counseling programs in North Carolina. We provide you with up-to-date tools and techniques to apply in the professional world. We will prepare you to assist in drug and alcohol counseling, prevention-oriented educational activities, rehabilitation with recovering clients, managing community-based programs, and to pursue four-year degrees, just to name few areas.
So where can I work?
WPCC’s program will prepare you for a profession in this important career field. Some examples of positions you could qualify for are DUI workers / assistants, addictions counselor, residential facility employees, and substance education specialists.
