Championing Accessibility & Inclusion

Diversability 2022 is WPCC’s annual disability awareness event, sponsored by the Student Government Association, coordinated by the Office of Disability Services, and supported by the Western Piedmont Foundation. Other partners include: the Recreation Therapy Assistant program, the Fine Arts program, the Library/Academic Success Center, and TRIO Student Support Services.

 

A month-long event – Diversability celebrates diversity, focusing on disabilities, and creating a culture of understanding, acceptance & inclusion!

Chalk The Walks
(All Month Long!)

October 3rd-28th, 2022

Help spread the word! During Diversability month, share a supportive message through art or words using chalk on any campus sidewalk or in your neighborhood.

How to Participate

 
  1. Choose a supportive message that promotes a positive culture of inclusion and accessibility.
  2. Get your chalk from Student Services in Hildebrand Hall or use your own.
  3. Choose a well-located sidewalk square and complete your chalk art message.
  4. Not on campus? Students can participate by drawing on any surface at their home.
  5. If you are on social media, DM us on Instagram @wpcc_disabilityservices or comment under our Facebook Page WPCC Disability Services a picture of your drawing to have your photo reposted! #wpccdiversability2022
 
Sidewalk art will be captured by various WPCC’s photographers throughout the month. Selected chalk drawings/messages (best representing the theme of Diversability) will be posted to WPCC’s Social Media. Please include your name on any drawings you do so you can get credit and be included in a weekly drawing to receive a $10 gift card. Students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors are encouraged to participate. Ends October 28th.

 

YouTube Watch-A-Thon
(All Month Long!)

Listen to the stories and perspectives of individuals who have firsthand knowledge of what it’s like to accomplish life goals while navigating barriers and overcoming limitations. To be entered into a weekly $10 gift card drawing, let us know what videos you watch! Just send an email to studentservices@wpcc.edu and list the names of the videos you viewed. Your name will go in to the drawing that many times. Watch a few at a time and enter each week! Open to students, faculty, and staff. Weekly winners will be notified by email each Monday in October.

YouTube Watch-A-Thon will also be available on the big screen in Leviton Auditorium in Moore Hall on Diversability’s Kick-Off Days October 3rd & 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Amazing Accessibility Race

Back by popular demand, the Amazing Accessibility Race pits teams against a “race course” made up of various common activities students have to perform while at WPCC. However, the team has to complete the race while being “disabled” in some manner (i.e. in a wheelchair, etc.). The race illustrates both the challenges disabled students experience completing common tasks and some of the ways they may overcome these obstacles.
