English Language Civics
English Language (EL) Civics provides an easy way to study for the citizenship test while you learn English. Learn about US history, government, geography, culture, and citizenship while you learn English. The goal is to help you acquire skills to become an active and informed parent, worker, and community member.
What is the English as a Second Language (ESL) program?
The ESL program provides free classes for students who wish to learn English. Increase your speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills in English.
Why choose the English as a Second Language (ESL) program?
The program provides:
- free classes, free materials, and free tests
- learn workplace skills, community interaction, and college and career readiness
- friendly, supportive teachers
- prepare for the citizenship test
- small classes
- convenient times – morning or evening
- instructor-led classes and opportunities to practice computer skills
How long will it take?
It depends. You will be tested upon entering the program and placed into one of three levels. The time it takes to complete the program depends on what your skills are when you start and how hard you work while enrolled.
When and where do classes meet?
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes meet at the Jim A. Richardson Complex off Enola Road at 200 East College Drive.
- Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Monday through Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Community classes are available at the following locations and times:
- Hildebran United Methodist Church – Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
How does a student get started?
Come to your preferred location at any scheduled class time to begin.
How old do I need to be to enroll in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program?
The minimum age is 16. But if you are under 18 you need to contact the English as a Second Language Coordinator at 828-448-6750 before enrolling in the program.
