Utility Services & Locations

Utility Services Emergencies

Annual shutdown procedures training for utility services personnel will consist of a walk through and visual contact of shut-off locations. The Director of Crisis Management, Security personnel, Maintenance personnel, and Equipment/Receiving Coordinator will be given the proper tools and know the shut-off locations for these utilities. If during an emergency and the building structure is damaged, it should not be entered until the Director of Crisis Management has approved reentry.

Emergency Shutdown Procedures

Utility Services

The Director of Crisis Management and utility services trained employees will assess emergencies that may require utility services shut down.  If an emergency can be isolated to one building, a trained employee and an emergency responder will go to the isolated location.  Energy sources (identified by fluorescent orange-color paint) will be located and turned off.  In the event that an emergency situation is so severe and includes more than one building, the following utility companies will be call to shut down the utilities:

Electrical on Main Campus & Foothills Higher Education Center

  • City of Morganton: (828) 438-5277

Cemestry Lab (P-108 & HS-250)

Each student enrolled in any of the chemistry classes at WPCC is required to attend a safety lecture, complete a safety quiz and sign a safety contract.  Within the safety lecture, items covered are:

  • General Safety Rules
  • Safety Data Sheets
  • Interpretation of NFPA labels
  • Disposal of Materials
  • Fire Safety
  • Emergency Equipment
  • Emergency Exit Procedures

Students are specifically instructed on exit protocol, which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Keeping aisles clear for exit
  • Turning off gas at the outlet
  • Unplug all electrical appliances
  • Shutting down experimental procedures

Upon returning to the lab, most experimental procedures can be restarted without any special notations.

E Building - Room E-12

Turn off all equipment being used unless danger or hazard is imminent and life-threatening.

  • Fume Hood

❏  Switch is on front
❏  If material inside hood is fuming or otherwise hazardous, leave the hood on.
❏  If in doubt about material inside hood- leave hood on

  • Within the Fume Hood – Digestion Blocks

❏  Turn off at switch or unplug from outlet on hood front
❏  Digestion Blocks get very hot, do not touch, do not try to move

  • Sterilizer

❏  DO NOT OPEN DOOR IF IN OPERATION!
❏  Turn timer switch to OFF
❏  Let cool down completely before attempting to open

  • Any of the Analyzers/Meters

❏  Turn off at switch
❏  If switch isn’t readily visible, unplug from wall
❏  If an emergency that requires evacuation from E-12 Lab, it is not necessary to turn off the analyzers before they do not create a hazard

  • Drying Oven

❏  Turn off at switch on front

  • Hach Reators/Block Digesters

❏  Turn off at switch
❏  If switch isn’t readily visible, unplug from the wall
❏  These get very hot, do not touch digestion block

  • Vacuum Pump

❏  Turn off at switch
❏  If switch isn’t readily visible, unplug from wall

  • AV Equipment

❏  Turn off at switches

If the hazard or emergency is in E-12, turn off power from main breaker in mechanical room next door.

  • CAP OFF ANY CHEMICALS BEING USED
  • DO NOT LEAVE OPEN CONTAINERS UNLESS THERE IS NO OTHER SAFE OPTION.
Welding - C Building

In case of a life-threatening disaster, do the following:

  • Electrical

❏  Turn off the main power switch, located on the North wall of the Shop.

  • Welding Gas Cylinders

❏  Move outdoors and secure in the cylinder storage shed (if there is time to do so).
