Western Piedmont Community College’s Student Government President, Gerson Mendoza-Hipolito was awarded the Eddie H. Myers Leadership Award at the N4CSGA Conference held earlier this month in Raleigh, NC.

Given in honor of Eddie Myers, former Rowan-Cabarrus Vice President of Student Services, Myers was tireless in his commitment to community college students, particularly those involved in student government. The Eddie Myers Outstanding Advocacy Award is presented to an individual who has committed themselves to promoting and implementing positive change and advocacy on their campus and in their community.

“Gerson is an exemplary leader who deserves to be acknowledged for his contributions to the community,” WPCC Spanish Instructor Erin Mendoza said. “His dedication to highlighting diversity on our campus should motivate and inspire us all.”

Recipients must demonstrate the ability to motivate others to embrace change and a willingness to take the lead when it comes to implementing that change.

“This award demonstrates the type of person Gerson is. He saw a vision for this year’s SGA as president, which was to serve joyfully. Leaders always must have a vision for their projects but most importantly they have to be able to hear and understand the voices of those they serve and lead,” WPCC Student Activities Coordinator Madison Ervin said. “Gerson exemplifies the ability to lead others but to also serve them. This made him the perfect candidate and winner for this award!”

“I am honored to have received the Eddie Myers Outstanding Advocacy Award. This award is a testimony of an act of love to a community that serves joyfully. I am forever grateful and will continue to advocate for anyone who needs a voice.” SGA President Gerson Mendoza said.
