WPCC Announces New Health Sciences Program for Fall 2026
This fall, Western Piedmont Community College will offer coursework in a new associate in applied science in health sciences program. This program prepares students for success in healthcare by providing a strong foundation in courses essential for health practice while offering opportunities to earn stackable credentials in relevant healthcare roles such as phlebotomy and nurse aide along the way. This allows students to pursue entry-level healthcare support roles while continuing their education.
Graduates will demonstrate professional standards, apply both discipline-specific and general education skills, and possess the academic preparation needed for career growth or further study in advanced health science programs.
“The A.A.S. in Health Sciences is perfect for students who want to explore healthcare careers before choosing a specialty, complete general education coursework required for selective admissions healthcare programs, earn stackable credentials while working toward a degree or prepare for further study in various health science fields,” said Ava Yamouti, dean of health and public services. “The program also provides a path to degree completion for students who have taken courses in various health science programs, but not completed those programs, by allowing students to use some of those credits toward this degree.”
Students who complete the degree are eligible to apply to Appalachian State University’s online bachelor’s in health science program. ASU’s Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program is designed for individuals who have earned an Associate in Applied Science degree from a North Carolina community college. Many WPCC healthcare program graduates have benefited by being able to transfer into ASU’s program.
Registration for fall semester is currently open. Classes begin Aug. 17. For more information, students can contact Katharine Wright, department head for health sciences, at 828-448-3536 or kwright@wpcc.edu
