WPCC Interpreting Education Students Volunteer at Camp
Students in Western Piedmont Community College’s interpreter education program, Dara Fox (left) and David Yarbrough (right), recently volunteered as support service providers at the 2015 NC Deaf-Blind Associates (NCDBA) weekend at Camp Dogwood in Sherrills Ford, N.C. The mission of NCDBA is to advocate for the needs and rights of individuals who are deaf-blind and to enable individuals who are deaf-blind to achieve their maximum potential by being independent and productive in the mainstream as citizens of the state of North Carolina. Camp Dogwood serves blind and visually impaired citizens of cities and towns across North Carolina. It offers blind and visually impaired individuals an environment that is uniquely designed for their needs.
WPCC offers an Associate in Applied Science degree in interpreter education, a curriculum that prepares individuals to work as entry-level Sign Language Interpreters who will provide communication access in interview and interactive settings. In addition, this curriculum provides in-service training for working interpreters who want to upgrade their skills.
