Two New High School Diploma Tests Offered at WPCC
Students needing a high school credential now have more options at Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) at a lower cost. In addition to the General Education Development (GED®) test, WPCC’s College and Career Readiness (CCR) department now offers the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®) and the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC®). The new high school equivalency tests offer a paper-based testing option as well as computer-based testing.
The HiSET® was created by Educational Testing Service (ETS®) and is only available in paper-based form. The HiSET® consists of five test subjects: Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Costs for the HiSET® are $50.00 for all five subjects (referred to as the “Battery”) or can be purchased on a per-test basis for $15.00 each. If the Battery is purchased, a test-taker will get two free retakes, whereas there are no free retakes when subjects are purchased individually. Practice tests for the HiSET® are free and can be downloaded from www.hiset.ets.org. Paper-based practice tests are available in WPCC Career and College Readiness (CCR)’s Learning Center. Students can also schedule a time to take the HiSET® test at WPCC on www.hiset.ets.org . Testing for the HiSET® takes place on Tuesdays only.
The TASC® Test is developed by McGraw-Hill and will be available in paper-based format in January 2016. WPCC plans to offer a computer-based version of the test soon after that. The TASC® Test consists of five test subjects: Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Costs for the TASC® Test are $52.00 for all five subjects or $10.40 per test. Both options allow two free retakes. Practice tests for the TASC® Test are $10.00 and can be purchased online at www.tasctest.com. TASC® testing dates at WPCC will be announced in January.
The high school diploma pathways are offered by the College’s CCR department. Each year, students successfully completing WPCC’s Adult High School or High School Equivalency programs find their way to a credential that can increase personal income, increase job opportunities, and satisfy a requirement to go to college or military service. Many graduates also find that they become a positive role model for their families and children, increase options for the future, and improve their self-esteem.
