WPCC Foundation Thanks Golf Sponsors
MORGANTON—Western Piedmont Foundation’s 31st Annual Golf Classic, made possible by Caterpillar in Morganton, was recently held at Mimosa Hills Country Club. A record number of golfers attended the event to raise funding for community and professional development opportunities provided by Western Piedmont Community College.
“This was the largest number of golfers we have fielded and we appreciate each and every player, sponsor and volunteer who made this event possible,” said Atticus Simpson, executive director of the Western Piedmont Foundation (WPF). “Congratulations to our tournament winners and thank you for each team that took time out of their busy schedules to support us and make it possible for the Foundation to support our students and Burke County”
Thirty teams competed for team awards and hole prizes while also enjoying a beautiful afternoon of golf made possible by lead sponsor Caterpillar of Morganton.
“This is the seventeenth year Caterpillar has supported this event and we are honored by their commitment and support of the Foundation,” said Dr. Michael S. Helmick, president of Western Piedmont Community College. “Western Piedmont students, employees and the residents of Burke County directly benefit from Caterpillar’s presence in the community and this is another example of how they show their commitment to our community.”
Proceeds from the event go to support cultural arts programs offered on campus for the community, employee performance awards and a mini-grant program that encourages the pursuit of innovative teaching strategies, active learning projects and professional development.

The support we received from these local businesses and individuals made it possible for us to surpass our goal this year,” said Simpson. “They also made is possible to provide a venue where everyone could get together to have fun while at the same time doing something that will improve lives and promote growth in our community. Western Piedmont Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, was founded to encourage and develop public and private support for Western Piedmont Community College beyond that provided by county, state, and federal funds. Created in 1967, WPF was among the first fund-raising organizations within the NC Community College System. Many needs exist which are not sufficiently provided for by public sources, and private contributions assist the College in maintaining a margin of excellence above the average.
