College’s Professional Crafts Program Coordinator Featured in International Magazine
Morganton, NC – Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) Professional Crafts Program Coordinator Courtney Long is featured in the April/May 2014 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated. Her article, “How to Make a Spouted Bowl That Tells a Story,” shares with readers the joy to be found in creating and using narrative pottery. Long accomplishes that through her spouted batter bowls, each complete with a puffy cloud-shaped handle and whimsical slip decoration (shown right). In addition, her article demonstrates how she produces wheel thrown and altered pots.
Long’s specialized objects are both decorative and utilitarian and usually adorned with animals and foliage. “In my home, the kitchen is the center of all activity. Handmade pottery is used daily and symbolizes conscious cooking, eating and even cleaning up with friends and family,” said Long, “Little moments accumulate overtime and after a lifetime of usage the pots become family heirlooms, evoking a lifetime of stories connected to its users through memory and experience.”
Pottery Making Illustrated is offered by CeramicArtsDaily.org, an online community serving active potters and ceramic artists worldwide, as well as those who are interested in finding out more about this craft. CeramicArtsDaily.org is produced by the Ceramic Publications Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The American Ceramic Society, a more than 110 year-old non-profit organization that promotes the professional needs of the international ceramics community.
