Procedure

Admission to the College does not guarantee immediate acceptance to the curriculum program desired by the applicant. Admission to certain programs may have additional specific entrance requirements.

The Dean of Student Services administers all admissions requirements and enforces all College admission policies and procedures.

I. Curriculum Programs

A. Certificate, Diploma and Degree Seeking Applicants: For curriculum diploma and degree seeking applicants, all applicants must:

1. Submit a completed application for admission.
2. Provide an official high school transcript or an official GED score from an institution registered with the Department of Public Instruction or the Division of Non-Public Education in the state in which they are authorized to operate or approved by a regional or national accrediting agency if enrolled in: (1) an associate degree program; (2) certificate or diploma leading to an associate degree program; (3) other certificates or diplomas requiring high school completion per accrediting bodies or state agencies. These transcripts must include coursework, the date the diploma was awarded, the type of diploma and have the institution’s official seal. In addition, Applicants who have completed an associate’s degree or higher from a regional or national accredited post-secondary institution may submit college transcripts with conferred degree awarded in lieu of high school transcripts.
3. Determine college readiness and placement by (1) submitting high school transcripts or an approved standardized test; (2) submitting college transcripts with appropriate coursework; or (3) completing the College’s placement test to determine if developmental courses are required before enrollment into college-level math or English. If a student is placed into developmental English or math, these courses should be completed during the first two semesters of enrollment.

Placement test minimum scores (“cut scores”) are determined by the North Carolina Community College System. The College may approve more rigorous standards.

A student may be exempt from placement testing if one of the following criteria has been met:

a. Have graduated from high school. Placement is dependent on unweighted high school GPA or;
b. Have received an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution or;
c. Have taken the GED, since 2014, with a score of 145 or greater in each subject area or;
d. Have taken the HiSET with a score of 15 or greater for each of the five components and a grade of 4 or greater on the essay or;
e. Have graduated with an Adult High School Diploma since 2021; is dependent on unweighted GPA or;
f. Meet the ACT or SAT subject area test score requirements or;
g. Have successfully completed ENG 111 with a grade of “C” or better from an accredited institution or;
h. Have successfully completed a college level math course equivalent to or higher than required math course, with a grade of “C” or better from an accredited institution.

4. Returning students who are eligible for readmission and who have not been enrolled at the College for two (2) academic semesters must submit a new admissions application.

Students who have been placed on academic or disciplinary suspension must fulfill the terms of their suspension before being considered for readmission.

The College reserves the right to deny readmission to a former student, including a student who has unsettled financial obligations at the College or who has not complied with previous disciplinary requirements. All of the student’s debts to the College must be paid in full before registering for courses.

B. Non-Degree Seeking Applicants

A non-degree seeking/visiting student is defined as one who is enrolled in curriculum credit courses but who is not working toward a degree or diploma. Non-degree seeking/visiting students must complete Residency Determination and apply online. These students will be allowed to register for courses upon providing official documentation that prerequisite course requirements have been met.

Non-degree seeking/visiting students are required to submit proof of high school graduation and meet placement criteria if they desire to be reclassified as regular students. Non-degree seeking/visiting students pay the same tuition and fees as regular students.

C. Continuing Education Programs
For applicants seeking admission to a continuing education program, all applicants must complete the College’s continuing education registration process and pay the applicable tuition and institutional fees.
