Procedure

The College may grant credit for prior learning when students demonstrate college level achievement through an examination. Hours granted to students for credit by exam will apply toward Western Piedmont Community College graduation requirements only. Students shall earn no grade points for such credit, nor will they be able to transfer credits received by exam. In no case shall the combined total of any transfer credit hours, credits by examination, or course substitutions exceed 75% of the number of hours required for the degree or diploma to which students are applying those credits.

The College will consider the following examinations when awarding credit for prior learning:

Advanced Placement Program (AP)
Students wishing to receive credit for AP exams must submit an official score report from the College Board to the Office of the Director of Records and Registration. Students achieving a minimum score of three (3) on an AP exam will receive credit for the course covered by the exam.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Students wishing to receive credit for CLEP exams must submit an official CLEP transcript to the Office of the Director of Records and Registration. Students achieving a score at or above the minimum score set by the American Council on Education will receive the appropriate credit for the subject covered by the exam.

DANTES Subject Standardized Test (DSST)
Students wishing to receive credit for the DSST must submit an official DSST transcript to the Office of the Director of Records and Registration. Students achieving a score at or above the minimum score set by the American Council on Education will receive the appropriate credit for the subject covered by the test.

Departmental Proficiency Exams
The College may grant credit by examination when students demonstrate college level achievement in a subject area by earning a passing score on an examination approved by the academic department granting the credit. The program coordinator or director will determine the eligibility of a student to take a proficiency exam, establish the passing score, and administer the exam only one time.
