DEFINITIONS OF POSITION TYPES

a. Full-time Faculty
A faculty position established in the budget as a regular, recurring position. Employment is based on an annual assignment for nine (9) or more months per year and considered full-time weekly employment.

b. Chief Academic Officer
As the Chief Academic Officer, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Workforce Development is responsible for final teaching load decisions and has the discretion to delegate such authority to the Deans.

c. Dean
A Dean is a full-time administrative staff member who leads instructional divisions delivering various curriculum programs and supervises Department Heads, Program Coordinators, full-time instructors, and/or part-time instructors.

d. Department Head
A Department Head is a full-time faculty member who teaches AND supervises Program Coordinators, full-time instructors, and/or part-time instructors; and may have responsibility for one or more curriculum programs.

e. Program Coordinator
A full-time faculty member who teaches AND serves as the leading resource person for at least one curriculum, takes initiative in the recruiting of students, is chair of the curriculum advisory committee(s), is a leader in the annual program review and accreditation of the curriculum program(s), and supervises full-time instructor and/or adjunct recruitment, hiring, and supervision.

f. Adjunct Faculty
Adjunct faculty positions are not established in the budget. Employment contract is for a semester or less and less than full-time weekly employment. Adjunct faculty may teach either curriculum or continuing education courses.

g. Exempt Staff
Full-time, salaried employees working in classified staff positions that are not eligible for overtime pay per the Fair Labor Standards Act.

h. Non-Exempt Staff
Full-time, salaried employees working in classified staff positions that are eligible for overtime pay per the Fair Labor Standards Act.

II. FULL-TIME FACULTY WORK REQUIREMENTS

a. Requirements Per Term
The College provides a calendar outlining both teaching and non-teaching workdays for each academic year. On non-teaching workdays, instructors may prepare for classes, grade student work, advise students, or attend events such as convocation, graduation, meetings, and professional development. A non-teaching workday is at least six (6) hours.

i. Nine-month faculty. The College generally employs full-time instructors for a nine-month period that includes 175 days of work between August and May.

ii. Summer term. Nine-month instructors may receive adjunct work assignments during the summer term. While summer assignments generally require teaching, instructors may be employed to perform non-instructional duties such as advising or work related to accreditation. Hourly rates for summer instruction are based on each instructor’s education level, while the College uses flat rates to compensate faculty for non-instructional work in the summer.

iii. Twelve-month faculty. A small number of instructors will be employed to work twelve months, which equates to a minimum of 216 days.

b. Requirements Per Week
All full-time faculty will work at least 40 hours per week. While a typical work week would be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., work hours may include evening or weekend hours. Academic departments will typically schedule full-time faculty to work at least four (4) days per week, with at least 30 hours per week on campus. Faculty will designate at least five (5) office hours per week when they are available to students on campus; these times should be convenient for students in the instructor’s discipline.

The College may require instructors to engage in effective course scheduling and participate in activities, such as division meetings, committee meetings, and significant college functions—even when those activities occur outside the employee’s regularly scheduled hours on campus.

c. Teaching Load
After consulting with each instructor about scheduling needs, Department Heads will use established teaching loads to assign courses each semester. The Dean and Chief Academic Officer must approve teaching assignments that deviate from an instructor’s established load.

i. Established Loads. Departments should establish a typical teaching load for each full-time instructor. For most faculty, teaching loads will range from 18 to 22 contact hours per week or 288 to 352 instructional hours per semester. In certain programs, faculty will have higher teaching loads. In response to financial pressures, the College may assign faculty to courses that exceed their established load without additional compensation.

ii. Teaching Assignments. The Department Head and Dean may count courses (all times, locations, modalities), work-based learning, externships, internships, or any on-site work experience without direct on-site faculty supervision toward the instructor’s teaching load depending on the nature of the cooperative experience. Courses with very low enrollment or independent study arrangements may be combined with other responsibilities to total full load, but they will not meet load requirements on their own. In some cases, Department Heads and Deans may consider balancing an instructor’s load with a combination of high-enrolled and low-enrolled courses.

Any pairing of concurrent courses will result in the instructor being compensated for the course with the highest number of contact hours.

After consulting with each instructor about course and scheduling needs, Department Heads will use established teaching loads to assign courses each semester. The Dean and Chief Academic Officer must approve teaching assignments that deviate from an instructor’s established load.

iii. Reduced Teaching Loads. Department Heads and Deans may consider teaching load reductions when instructors face limited student enrollment or when they are tasked with administrative duties, special service to the college or department, or a high number of teaching preparations.

1. Underloads due to limited student enrollment. If low student enrollment prevents an instructor from reaching their established load, the Department Head will work with the Dean to assign alternative work duties.

2. Administrative duties. Faculty with administrative appointments may be eligible for load reductions each semester. Department Heads receive a reduction equal to six (6) contact hours per week or 96 instructional hours per semester. Program Coordinators may receive a reduction when it is determined by their Dean and the Chief Academic Officer that the reduction could lead to significant increases in enrollment, student success, compliance, or cost savings.

3. High number of teaching preparations. Department Heads and Deans may consider teaching preparations that add to a faculty member’s workload when recommending load reductions. A faculty member teaching multiple sections of the same course may not carry the same responsibility as a faculty member teaching the same number of sections of a variety of courses.

iv. Increased Teaching Loads. Department Heads and Deans may recommend increased teaching loads in the following situations:

Overloads. With a few exceptions, the College aims to have at least half of each program’s courses taught by full-time faculty, but the College recognizes the need to maintain a rich pool of adjunct instructors as well. Adjunct instructors can diversify perspectives and pedagogies, introduce new concepts from the field, and stabilize staffing levels. However, when adjuncts are not an option, the Dean and Chief Academic Officer may approve additional courses for full-time instructors. These overloads will result in additional compensation based on the College’s Adjunct Salary Administration Plan.

Regardless of the course delivery method, instructors who receive overload pay must perform their additional work on campus; therefore, overloads will require faculty to be on campus beyond the 30 hours that are required for instructors teaching a standard course load. Additionally, overloads should not impact the instructor’s regular duties, including campus and community involvement.

v. Continuing Education Course Assignments. While full-time faculty typically teach curriculum courses, they may occasionally be asked to teach courses for the Workforce Development and Continuing Education division as well. If a faculty member is already assigned a full teaching load, a continuing education assignment should be handled as a separate adjunct contract. If, however, a faculty member has not otherwise met their established load for a semester, their Department Head and Dean may recommend that continuing education teaching hours count toward their required work load.

vi. Faculty Workload Sheet. Upon completion of teaching assignments each semester, Department Heads will submit a Faculty Workload Worksheet outlining each instructor’s course reductions, course assignments, and other related instructional hours.

vii. Faculty Locator Form. Before the start of the semester, each instructor will complete a “Faculty Locator Form” that documents teaching and office hours as well as time set aside for any course reductions or overloads. The instructor will post the form on their office door and provide the same information in their online course shells to provide students with information about their availability. The Department Head will also submit the form to the Chief Academic Officer so that the information can be posted for colleagues across the college.

III. ADJUNCT FACULTY WORK REQUIREMENTS

a. Requirements Per Week

Adjunct faculty may teach up to 29 hours per week after the College has applied appropriate Affordable Care Act multipliers – 2.25 for lecture courses, 1.25 for lab courses, and 1 Cosmetology and clinical courses. It is critical that all adjunct teaching assignments—including curriculum and continuing education courses—be counted in this total.

In rare cases, Department Heads and Deans may recommend an adjunct to work more than 29 hours per week; however, the following conditions must be met:

The Chief Academic Officer may approve an adjunct to exceed 29 hours per week for up to one semester.

With guidance from the Vice President of Administrative Services and the Director of Human Resources, the Chief Academic Officer may approve an adjunct to exceed 29 hours per week for a second consecutive semester.

Under no circumstances will an adjunct be approved to work beyond 29 hours per week for three or more consecutive semesters.

b. Adjunct Faculty Duties
In addition to course instruction, an adjunct instructor’s workload includes college orientation, course preparation, evaluation of student performance, required record keeping, and meetings with supervisors when necessary. Additionally, the College may require attendance and participation in specific professional development for which adjunct faculty will receive compensation.

The College does not expect nor does it compensate adjuncts to perform non-instructional activities normally assigned to full-time instructors (ex. office hours, advising, registration, and committee work). However, the College does not prohibit adjuncts from voluntarily engaging in such activities if approved in advance by their Dean or Chief Academic Officer.

c. Staff Teaching Assignments
Recognizing the valuable contributions that professional staff members can bring to the classroom, the College permits Department Heads to hire staff members as follows:

i. Exempt staff members may teach courses on an adjunct basis, but all instruction must occur outside of their regular work hours.

ii. Non-exempt staff may be eligible to teach courses outside of their regular work hours if their time-and-a-half pay does not exceed the cost of adjunct pay.

iii. Staff members who have teaching responsibility included among their written job duties may teach course at any time.

IV. INSTRUCTOR ABSENCES AND SUBSTITUTES
To ensure instructional continuity and limit the need for students to make-up lost class time, the College will attempt to provide a substitute when an instructor is absent.

a. Absences
The absent faculty member must notify their immediate supervisor, Department Head, or Dean as soon as possible and make every effort to arrange coverage for classes they will miss. Full-time instructors must account for their absences in accordance with College leave policies and procedures. Additionally, the College will adjust contracts for adjunct faculty to reflect the missed work time.

b. Substitutes
Program Coordinators and Department Heads may assign full-time faculty to cover classes for other instructors on an immediate or short-term basis. Substitute arrangements that last beyond a few weeks may result in additional compensation for either full-time or adjunct faculty, paid at the hourly adjunct rate. Whether additional compensation is due for a short-term teaching assignment will be determined by the Dean, who will forward a recommendation to the Chief Academic Officer.

RELATED DOCUMENTS
· Faculty Workload Worksheet
· Faculty Locator Sheet
· Adjunct Salary Administration Plan

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

        I.
