Excellence\u00a0In Teaching Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Established by Western Piedmont Foundation, Inc., the Excellence in Teaching Award is given annually to a full-time and adjunct faculty member of the curriculum faculty in recognition of his\/her outstanding qualities as a teacher. Committed to the mission of the comprehensive community college, these teachers make every effort to assist students in achieving their highest potentials and to encourage inquiring minds. The selection criteria consist of demonstration or examples of:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Interactions with students that focus on their successful development as whole persons.<\/li>\n
  2. Effective classroom environments that result in motivated students and successful learning.<\/li>\n
  3. Innovations in teaching methods including the effective use of technology.<\/li>\n
  4. Professional development activities and experiences that enhance teaching effectiveness.<\/li>\n
  5. Leadership roles beyond the classroom related to the practice and profession of teaching.<\/li>\n
  6. Past recognition and awards received as a faculty member.<\/li>\n
  7. Overall consistent and excellent job behaviors that exhibit unselfish devotion and significant contributions to student, College, and System success (exceeds normal expectations).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Selection of the nominee is based on the following procedure:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. A selection committee, comprised of the past five (5) award recipients that are current full-time employees of the college. The chair will be the person who received the award before any others on the committee.<\/li>\n
    2. Past recipients are ineligible for nomination for a period of five (5) years or tenure on the committee, whichever is longer.<\/li>\n
    3. The chair shall publish the criteria and nomination procedures weekly in relevant college publications and distribute notices to all employees during the first week of February through the third week of March.<\/li>\n
    4. Letters of nomination are due by the last work day in March.<\/li>\n
    5. Full-time nominees must be College curriculum faculty currently employed where teaching is their primary responsibility. Adjunct nominees must have been employed under an adjunct teaching contract during at least one semester in the current academic year.<\/li>\n
    6. The names of the selected nominees will be forwarded to the Office of the President by May 1. Announcement of the full-time award is made at Spring Commencement. Announcement of the adjunct award is made at the following fall adjunct faculty orientation.<\/li>\n
    7. No permanent files are maintained. All committee notes and materials are destroyed.<\/li>\n
    8. State level award information to be completed by current committee and submitted to the President\u2019s Office by September 1 for electronic submission to the System Office.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      <\/span>Outstanding Staff Member Award<\/div>
      \n

      Oustanding Staff Member Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Established by Western Piedmont Foundation, Inc., the Outstanding Staff Member Award is given annually to a full-time staff member of the College in recognition of his\/her superior contributions as an employee. This employee should demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy of the community college and to the mission and goals of the College. The following positions are not eligible to receive the Outstanding Staff member Award: President, Vice Presidents, Academic Deans, and full-time faculty. The selection criteria include:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Commitment and contribution to the mission of the college and the North Carolina Community College System;
        \na. Minimum period of two years\u2019 service with the College
        \nb. Has a good attitude toward safety, follows safe practices, and influences others to do the same<\/li>\n
      2. Excellent job performance exhibiting consistent devotion and contribution to the College, which exceeds normal job requirements;
        \na. Is willing to take on additional duties when the need arises;
        \nb. Excellence attendance and punctuality<\/li>\n
      3. Evidence of initiative, innovation and leadership in their area of responsibility;
        \na. Consistently demonstrates an ability to cope with varied problems;
        \nb. Accomplishes objectives effectively<\/li>\n
      4. Responsible, efficient use of time, money, technology, and\/or college resources;
        \na. Shows a cooperative attitude toward College policies
        \nb. Exercises good judgment and is dependable in fulfilling responsibilities<\/li>\n
      5. Keeps abreast of current development in his\/her field of expertise by participating in professional and personal development;
        \na. Commitment to \u201clifelong learning\u201d<\/li>\n
      6. Willingness to share time and expertise through service to the College, its students, and the community<\/li>\n
      7. Suggestions which resulted in financial savings to the College;
        \na. Suggestion which resulted in a unique program which became a model for the system
        \nb. Suggestion which met a pressing community need<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

         <\/p>\n

        Selection Procedures<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. The selection committee will be comprised of five (5) members. For each year, the committee will be comprised of the most recent actively employed recipients, not to exceed a total of five. The chair will be the person who had received the award before any others on the committee.<\/li>\n
        2. Past recipients and\/or current committee members are ineligible for nomination for a period of five (5) years following receipt of the award or tenure on the committee whichever is longer.<\/li>\n
        3. The chair shall publish the criteria and nomination procedures weekly in relevant college publications and distribute notices through email to all full-time employees third week of March through third week of May.<\/li>\n
        4. Letters of nomination will be due to the committee chair by first work day in June.<\/li>\n
        5. Nominees must be currently employed full-time College staff members.<\/li>\n
        6. The nominee\u2019s name will be submitted to the Office of the President by July 1. Announcement of the award to be made at Fall Convocation Breakfast.<\/li>\n
        7. No written documentation will be maintained. All committee notes and materials will be destroyed.<\/li>\n
        8. State level award information to be completed by current committee and submitted to President\u2019s Office by September 1 for electronic submission to the System Office.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          A member of Western Piedmont Community College\u2019s part-time curriculum faculty is honored each year for superior work history, strong commitment to WPCC\u2019s open-door philosophy, and dedication to educating students.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

          <\/span>Employee Recognition for Retirement<\/div>
          \n

          Employee Recognition for Retirement<\/strong><\/p>\n

          The College will recognize employees retiring from the College who are eligible for North Carolina retirement benefits. Recognition activities by campus individuals, groups, or divisions are encouraged; however, these will be totally apart from the official College recognition. A gift from the College will be given to each honoree who retires with fifteen or more full-time years of service to the College. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for policy implementation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

          <\/span>Emeritus Status for Faculty and Staff<\/div>
          \n

          Emeritus Status for Faculty and Staff<\/p>\n

          Emeritus Status is an honorary designation for retired persons who have rendered singular service to College as a member of the faculty or staff.\u00a0 Emeritus Status is conferred by the Trustees on the recommendation of the College President.\u00a0 Nominations for Emeritus Status may be forwarded by any College employee or group of employees to the President.\u00a0 The following conditions apply for nominations:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Emeritus Status may be extended to retired persons only on the basis of merit exhibited through distinguished service to the College;<\/li>\n
          2. The nominee must have fully retired from the College, although occasional part-time work at the College will not be precluded; and<\/li>\n
          3. The nominee must have served at least fifteen (15) years on the faculty or staff of the College immediately prior to retirement.<\/li>\n
          4. The recommendation must be made no later than the end of the second year of retirement. The status of Instructor Emeritus will designate the academic department which closely parallels the person\u2019s academic degree.\u00a0 Staff granted Emeritus Status will normally be designated in their work area, but may be designated with an administrative title such as \u201cDean Emeritus\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

             <\/p>\n
