WPCC Celebrates Medical Assistants Recognition Week

Morganton, NC – The Western Piedmont Community
College Medical Assisting Program is celebrating Medical Assistants Recognition Week, October 18-22, 2021, as designated by the American Association of MedicalAssistants (AMMA).

WPCC hosted a special event to recognize Medical Assisting students of both classes on October 19th. Dr. Joel Welch, WPCC President, served as a guest speaker.

WPCC ’21 graduates Chasity Setzer and Jordan Sparks joined currents students on campus and reflected on their time in the program.

“The program will test your limits, but it makes you strong in not wanting to give up,” Setzer said. “It’s a big learning experience because it’s not just the clinical area – you have administrative and laboratory too. It definitely pulls out your weaknesses and helps you be more sufficient in those weaknesses.”

“You learn a lot of skills that will help you in the medical field and life in general. The program here is rewarding,” Sparks said. “The instructors here are always willing to help you in whatever you need and they hold you to a high standard.”

The Medical Assisting Program at WPCC was the first program organized in North Carolina. During this week, Medical Assistants across the country will be recognized and honored on Medical Assistants Recognition Day on October 20, 2021.

Medical Assistants are proving to be the allied health professional of choice for medical practices and urgent cares. Medical Assisting is one of the nation’s fastest growing careers according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“The Medical Assisting Program offered by WPCC allows students who are motivated to work in the healthcare field the opportunity to enhance and develop the many skills necessary to be successful in this career,” student Choua Yang said. “In addition to completing their training within a reasonable time frame, this program serves as the steppingstone to future opportunities in the medical profession.”

Medical Assisting is an allied health profession whose practitioners function as members of the health care delivery team and perform administrative, laboratory and clinical procedures.
