Step by Step Guide for Completing Financial Aid at WPCC

1. Complete the Western Piedmont Community College application for admission. Return it to the college and an advisor will be assigned. Your financial aid application cannot be processed until this step is completed.

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The applications are located on the rack in Student Services in Hildebrand Hall. Directions are included. Mail the application in the envelope that is enclosed. The application may also be completed online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.  Since it takes several weeks to process the application, it is faster to complete it online.

3. Request a high school transcript be sent to WPCC.  Request an academic transcript be sent to WPCC from any other colleges you have attended.

4. Take the placement test. A schedule is available in Student Services.

5. Check the financial aid rack in Student Services for scholarship applications. The WPCC scholarship application needs to be returned to the WPCC Financial Aid Office. Other scholarships may need to be mailed to the address indicated.

6. As a result of completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, you will receive a Student Aid Report in the mail. This report will indicate the types of aid for which you are eligible. The Financial Aid Office at WPCC will receive a copy of this report electronically. When you receive the Student Aid Report, carefully review it for accuracy. Also check to see if WPCC is listed.  If there are errors, contact the financial aid office. We can make corrections electronically. If there are no errors, do not mail the Student Aid Report back to the processor.

7. After the financial Aid Office at WPCC receives the Student Aid Report, one of the following will happen:

  • We will send a letter requesting you submit certain information for verification. After verification and any corrections are made, we will send you an award letter indicating your award type and amount.
    Or

  • We will send an award letter indicating your award type and amount.
    Or

  • We will send a letter saying you are ineligible.

8. The award letter includes a packet of information that will contain some    forms that need to be returned to the Financial Aid Office. Read the information carefully, return the requested forms, and keep the remaining information for reference.

9. See your advisor and set up your class schedule. Your schedule will then be entered into the computer. If you are a new student, attend New Student Orientation in the Fall.

10 After seeing your advisor, you must go to the Business Office in Moore Hall to pay your fees. There will be signs to direct you through this process.

11. Depending on the information on the award letter, you will need to proceed as follows:

  • If you are eligible for a Pell Grant - After your schedule is entered into the computer, go to the Business Office in Moore Hall and pay your tuition and fees. Tell the cashier you have a Pell Grant and it will be applied to cover the cost of your tuition and fees.

  • If you are eligible for a loan - You will need to pay your tuition and fees on registration day. You will receive the loan check at a later date.

  • If you are eligible for a scholarship - The method for receiving scholarships will vary. Most are available at the scholarship table in Moore Hall. If it is not available, you will need to pay your fees. The scholarship will be received at a later date.

  • If you are eligible for the NC Community College Grant – Most eligible students will have a check available for payment of tuition/fees at the scholarship table in Moore Hall.  If the check is not available that day, you will need to pay your tuition and fees.  A notice will be mailed to you when the check is available.  At that time, you can pick the check up at the window in the Business Office.  This grant is only available for Fall and Spring Semesters.

12. After paying, you will receive a receipt and an official copy of your schedule. Take this with you to the Bookstore and you will be able to buy your books. If you have a Pell Grant, inform the bookstore staff and this will be applied to the cost of your books.

Congratulations!  You should be ready to start classes.
