Digital Effects and Animation Technology (DEAT) student:

Student helped paint the mural on the Kimbrell's building in downtown Morganton.

"Working on the mural for Mark Poteat (the faculty lead on this project) was fun. At times, working on the mural was better than sitting in class all day. If I ever had the chance to do it again, I would not mind. I believe it is good experience for art classes to get hands on experience."  -- Joe Kue, Sep. 2008

Therapeutic Recreation Students:

Service Learning gave me the opportunity to deal with failure and learn from my mistakes. --Barbara Ledford, 2008

I learned that I can overcome a life-long fear by shifting focus from myself and on to others; I learned this through the Kids on the Block puppet shows. --Ellen Swink, 2008

Through serving the community, I was able to develop confidence in myself and apply it to my current job, which has brought great respect from my co-workers and clients. --Kelli Huggins, 2008

I learned from experience through Service Learning to I overcome a life-long fear because I needed to do what the clients were doing. I had a great fear of water, but did what clients were doing in the adapted skiing class. I was afraid but, I did it and it changed my life!  --Ollie Tate, 2008

Accounting Students Reflect on the VITA (free income tax assistance) program :

My attitude about this program changed from __________ at the beginning to one of __________ by the end of the program.

It did not take long to lose the nervous feeling. I definitely gained a more confident approach very quickly. I knew from the beginning that the program would be a positive experience for all people involved. My positive view just continued to grow as the weeks progressed. There were some times when I was looking forward to the class. And, most students do not say that often about their classes. --Jody Crane, May 2008

•What did I like/dislike about the program?

At first I was very nervous, but after a couple of days I began to feel at ease. I enjoyed talking with the different people and learning different tax concepts that I didn’t know about. I also enjoyed working with different students in our class, it was a chance to get to know them a little better. --Patsy Beach, May 2008

•Other Comments

I found out that a lot of the people just liked to talk to someone. I think a lot of the elderly were just lonely. The low income and elderly didn’t have money to pay for their taxes to be done. Wish it didn’t end so soon I was just starting to have fun. --Tammy Bumgarner, May 2008
