Full-time Employee Benefits

Retirement
The employee, State, and the investment earnings on total contributions pay the cost of providing employee's retirement benefits. Employees contribute 6% of gross salary on a pre-tax basis, and the state currently contributes 8.14%. The amount of your benefit or your monthly payments at retirement are determined based on your salary, age, and years of service.

Short-term Disability
Short-term disability benefits are provided through the college at no cost to you and payable after one (1) year of service following the conclusion of the sixty (60) day waiting period not to exceed 365 calendar days.

Long-term Disability
Long-term disability benefits are provided to you at no cost and payable after five (5) years of service following the conclusion of the short-term disability period or after salary continuation payments cease, whichever is later, for as long as you are permanently disabled.

Medical Insurance
Full-time employees may in enroll in the State of NC Comprehensive Major Medical Plan or PPO Health Plan.  The College pays 100% of the cost in the Indemnity Plan and the PPO Basic and Standard Plans.  The employee pays a portion for coverage in the PPO Plus Plan.  Family members may be insured at an additional cost.  The effective date of coverage will be either the first day of the month following employment if you work one-half or more scheduled work days during the first month of employment, or the first day of the second month following employment if you work less than one-half of the scheduled work days.

Vacation
Vacation days for instructional faculty consist of all days that the College is not in session or those designated faculty/student vacation days in the College calendar. Professional and other staff members are eligible for vacation as follows:

Sick Leave
Sick leave is earned at the rate of eight (8) hours per month (12 days per year). Unused sick leave is credited toward years of service at retirement.

Holidays
Twelve (12) paid holidays are granted per year as follows:

  • New Year’s Day (Friday or Monday, when day occurs on weekend)

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. (3rd Monday in January)

  • Easter

  • Independence Day, July 4th (Friday or Monday, when day occurs on weekend)

  • Labor Day (1st Monday in September)

  • Thanksgiving (two days, Thanksgiving Day and Friday)

  • Winter/Christmas 5 days (Holidays will be determined each year based upon requirements of the academic calendar)

Parent Involvement in Public Schools
Western Piedmont Community College supports employee involvement in the public schools and grants eight (8) hours paid leave per academic year to any employee who is a parent, guardian, or person standing loco parent is of a school-aged student.

Shared Leave
This policy provides an opportunity for employees to assist another affected by a medical condition that requires absence from duty resulting in possible loss of income due to lack of accumulated leave.

Educational Leave
Full-time faculty and staff are eligible to apply for educational leave with or without pay. Certain conditions may apply.

Enrollment in College Courses
Each full-time employee may enroll in one curriculum or continuing education course per semester at Western Piedmont Community College or at any North Carolina Department of Community Colleges institution without tuition or registration fees.

Longevity
Employees are eligible to receive longevity pay after ten (10) years of service. Annual longevity pay amounts are based on the length of aggregate state service and a percentage of the employee’s annual rate of base pay on the date of eligibility.

Long-Term Care
A comprehensive, federally tax-qualified Long-Term Care Benefit package that provides security for you and the ones you love. This program provides coverage for nursing home care, home health care, and care received in assisted living facilities. Premiums may be tax deductible. All cost is paid by employee, and payroll deduction is provided by the college.

Death Benefit
Paid to your beneficiary if you die while still in active service after one (1) year of service. Equal to highest twelve (12) consecutive months, but no less than $25,000 and no more than $50,000.

Supplemental Life and Accident
Optional policies such as, cancer, accidents, and total disability due to sickness are offered through Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company. All premium charges are paid by employee, and payroll deductions are provided by the college.

Health Care Flexible Spending Account
The Health Care Flexible Spending Account Plan helps pay out-of-pocket medical costs while increasing your spendable income. The benefit qualifies under the Code Section 125 of the IRS. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in the program.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account
The Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account Plan can make the expense for care of dependents more affordable. The benefit qualifies under the Code Section 125 of the IRS. All full-time employees with dependents under age 13 are eligible to participate in the program. Qualified dependent care expenses also include costs for the care of a spouse or dependent who is in capable of self-care and regularly spends at least eight hours per day in your home.

Dental Insurance
Coverage includes preventive, basic, major and orthodontia benefits. All premium costs are paid by employee, and payroll deduction is provided by the college.

Vision Insurance
Coverage includes full complement of services from over 27,000 ophthalmologists, optometrists and optician providers throughout the U.S.

Tax-Deferred Annuities/Mutual Funds/401(k)
Supplemental retirement income which allows employees to make pre-tax contributions through payroll deductions.

Employee Assistance Program
A program that is made available for employees, their spouse, and/or dependent children. It provides confidential and professional assistance to help resolve problems that are affecting an employee’s personal life. This benefit is provided up to four visits per fiscal year.

Worker’s Compensation
This plan provides coverage only for injuries sustained while acting in the course of one’s employment responsibilities.

State Employee’s Credit Union
Payroll deductions are available for deposit to the State Employees’ Credit Union. Applications and information may be obtained from the Credit Union Office.

SEANC
Employees are eligible to join the State Employees Association of North Carolina. As a member, the employee may apply for a variety of life insurance plans, discount buying opportunities, college scholarship program, vision programs and travel savings.

Phifer Wellness Center
A 26,000 square foot wellness and fitness facility designed to improve the health and well-being in our community. Facility includes indoor swimming pool, aerobic exercise studio, whirlpool, weight room, child care while exercising, men and women’s locker rooms, both equipped with sauna and steam rooms and three racquetball courts. All costs are paid by employee. Payroll deduction is provided by the college.

State Employee Incentive Bonus Program (SEIBP)
The SEIBP recognizes state employees who submit ideas to help the state decrease costs, increase revenues, and improve its services to the people of North Carolina. Extra money, time off, and public recognition can be earned by an employee for presenting unique and effective suggestions. See your Human Resources department for a suggestion form.
