Transportation

Western Piedmont Community College does not provide transportation for persons with disabilities around campus or to or from their residences. However, Burke Transit Administration, a local transportation provider includes in its fleet in-town buses with wheelchair lifts buses to  serve persons with disabilities.  For assistance you should contact the Burke County Transit Administration at 828-438-0491.

Disability Parking

Parking for persons with disabilities is governed by North Carolina General Statutes, §§ 20.37.5, 20.37.6, and 20.37.6A.  Handicapped parking spaces are restricted to those vehicles displaying a current handicapped license plate or hanging placard issued by the state.

The fine for parking in a designated handicapped space is $100.  It is also unlawful to use a handicapped placard or plate that is not specifically registered to you.  This law is strictly enforced on Western Piedmont Community College campuses.  In addition to the $100 fine, law enforcement officers may cause a vehicle parked in violation of this section to be towed.  Students violating parking regulations will be ticketed and may be subject to probation or suspension as defined in the Student Code of Conduct.

Because wheelchair-accessible parking spaces are limited, individuals with properly displayed distinguishing license plates or placards who do not require a wheelchair-accessible space are encouraged to use other available spaces, if possible, as a courtesy to those who do use wheelchairs.
