Accommodations for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students include
sign language interpreters, as well as TypeWell®
real time captioning for access to classes and extracurricular events
upon request.
Interpreters
Our interpreters are either certified and licensed or have been determined
qualified to interpret. Interpreters translate from spoken English to ASL or
Contact Sign Language, whichever is deemed most appropriate for the student with
whom they are working.

Transcribers
Our transcribers use the TypeWell®
transcription system, a meaning-for-meaning system. This means the
transcriber uses a laptop to capture all spoken content in class communication,
including jokes, off-the-point comments, behavioral control, etc.

Interpreter/Transcriber
"No-Show" Policy
If
interpreter/transcription services have been requested, and you know that you
will be unable to attend class, you should provide the Disability Access Office
with at least 24 hours advanced notice so that interpreters and/or transcribers
can be informed. Failure to provide any advanced notice is considered a
“No-Show."
To give advance notice, a student may:
-
Call the office at
828-438-6066 and leave a message; there is a TTY phone at this
number.
-
Contact the
Disability Access Assistant (Deanna Keller: 448-3154)
or the Coordinator (David Collins: 448-3153)
and speak to them either in person or leave a message by voice or
relay or TTY. If you prefer, you may email
Deanna Keller at
dkeller@wpcc.edu
Failure
to provide notice will result in the following actions:
-
First
“No-Show”: Interpreter will wait for 15 minutes and then contact the Disability
Access Office for reassignment.
-
Second
“No-Show”: A letter will be sent to the student informing the student that they
have two “No-Shows”: In addition, the letter will remind the student of the
policy and appropriate procedures.
-
Third “No-Shows” in the same week period: Services will
automatically be temporarily suspended and a letter will sent to the student
informing the student of the policy and the appropriate procedure. Services will
remain suspended until the student makes an appointment and meets with the
Coordinator of Disability Access in to reinstate services.
Excessive
absences: Even with advance notice, excessive absences are a problem for both
the student and the interpreter.
