    Serves children ages 6-14 (once enrolled can be served until 18), primarily from single parent families who are in need of an adult friend and/or role model.  There are no fees for the service. Both the parent and the child must want a mentor and have a say in the match between child and mentor.  Community-based mentors are age 18 or older, with transportation; they commit to spending quality one-to-one time with their “Little” twice a month, for a minimum of one year. School-based mentors are age 16 or older, with transportation and commit to going to the student’s school for one hour each week during the school day. Office hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

    Purpose is to alleviate the suffering and improve the lives of those directly affected by alcohol and chemical dependency.  Services include information and referral center on alcohol and drug issues, prevention and education talks to community groups, telephone crisis counseling, individual, family and group counseling, after-care, follow-up and monitoring, Student Assistance Program in middle and high schools, Adolescent Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment for youth ages 12-17, School Intervention Program (SCIP), court-ordered assessments, health and recovery coaching, and a residential recovery program for men (Flynn Recovery Community).

    Through 4-H, young people in North Carolina and Burke County learn new skills and serve their communities each year. Burke County 4-H offers boys and girls ages 5-19 opportunities to be involved in clubs, special interest programs, summer camps, and school enrichment. Guided by North Carolina Cooperative Extension Agents and adult and teen volunteers, 4-H’ers gain knowledge, skills and experience that help them become responsible citizens and leaders.

    Provides on and off site consultation/training to childcare programs.  Conducts Annual Child Care Immunization Report audits and provides delinquent notices.  Provides information on accessing preventive and/or primary health services.  Conducts training for child care staff which may include, but is not limited to, the following curriculums:  Emergency Preparedness and Response for Child Care, Sanitation, Oral Health and Young Children, Poisoning Prevention, Preventing Injury: Home Safety, Stress Management for Child Caregivers, Sun Safety in Early Child Care and Education Programs, and Infant/Toddler Safe Sleep & SIDS Risk Reduction In Child Care.

    Provides free and confidential tutoring to teach Burke County citizens to read and/or improve their literacy skills.  Recruits and trains volunteer tutors, provides books and a place to study.  Project Flower helps immigrants learn to read, write, and speak English – transportation is provided and childcare for age’s birth to 5 years is available for Project Flower participants.  Project Citizenship helps immigrants prepare for and pass the Immigration and Naturalization (INS) examination.  Mother Read/Father Read program teaches the “why” and “how” of reading.

    Designed to offer guidance and compassionate Christian support to women and girls who are experiencing untimely pregnancies.  Services include pregnancy testing, ultrasounds (if qualified), counseling, free maternity and infant clothing, baby equipment and supplies, a resource library, and referrals to doctors/community resources as needed.
