Star Baughman was a sixth grader when she was selected as a recipient of the first Burke Collegiate Scholars program at Western Piedmont Community College. Her mother used to say, "Dream high, keep doing your best, and never quit!" Baughman has lived by those words of wisdom throughout her entire life. As a young student, she was determined to make the best of her opportunities and decided that when she grew up she wanted to be a teacher.
Always motivated and positive, Star graduated from Western Piedmont Community College with an associate in arts degree, a 3.7 GPA, Phi Theta Kappa membership and employment at the College. She earned a bachelors degree in elementary education from Lees-McRae College through a cohort on the Western Piedmont campus and immediately started work with a local elementary school. Star attributes her success to the opportunity to pursue a higher education, the encouragement and support of her counselors, and that she never gave up on reaching her dreams.
"Each one of us has the potential to make a difference in someone else's life. It is truly the best gift we can give one another."
