The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides free services to students currently enrolled, students preparing for the college placement test, and students requiring a proctor for distance learning courses at other institutions.  For more information, please contact the ASC at 828-448-3115.

College Placement Test Prep/Career and College Promise Students

Prospective students planning on attending Western Piedmont may prepare for the placement test in the ASC.  Diagnostic testing in reading, writing, and math assists staff in creating an individualized study program.  Study programs are designed for a brief brush-up of skills.  Prospective students should plan to spend 25 hours in each of the diagnostic testing areas to sufficiently prepare for the college placement test.  Staff and tutors are available to assist students with their study program.  Books are available for use in the Academic Success Center.  Take-home worksheets are also available.  PLATO, a web-based program, is available for prospective students who have Internet access at home.  For information on websites that offer tutorials, study skills practice exercises and tests, click on the following link:  Tutorials and Study Skills Link

Tutoring Services

Math and English tutors

Tutoring is FREE and is available to students in math and English.  An appointment is not necessary.  Walk-ins are welcome.  Students should ask their instructor to complete a MATH AND ENGLISH SKILLS TUTOR REFERRAL FORM that requests specific tutoring in certain areas of coursework.  This referral will identify topics for the tutor to focus on during study sessions.  ALL REQUESTS ARE CONFIDENTIAL.

Students are encouraged to bring textbooks, notes, assignments, and any questions or specific areas with which they need help.  Auxiliary aids and alternative formats are available upon request.  Please advise the Center three (3) business days in advance if you have a disability and desire accommodations.  Math tutoring services are provided to assist students with concepts, not homework.

Computer tutor

A computer tutor is available for students needing assistance with email, Blackboard, Pioneer Pass, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and assignments that need to be completed on the computer.

Computers are available for completion of homework assignments any time we are open for students who do not need assistance.

Peer tutoring

One-on-one peer tutoring, when available, is a FREE service provided to any WPCC curriculum student.  Students may request a peer tutor in any subject in which they are having difficulty.  Applications to request peer tutoring are available in the ASC.  Assigning a student a peer tutor is not a guarantee and depends on schedules and skills of current students who have been approved to be a peer tutor.  Please contact the ASC for more information at 828-448-3115.

What you need to know:

To Become a Peer Tutor

• You must have received an “A” or “B” grade in each subject that you wish to tutor.
• Transcripts from all colleges attended are required for tutor approval in any course subject.
• You must be able to meet with your student in the Academic Success Center for tutoring sessions regularly throughout the semester (at agreed upon times).
• You must be able to keep up with timesheets and monthly reports.
• You must maintain a positive and professional attitude with students.

To Become a Peer Tutee

• You must have an 80 average or below or a recommendation from your instructor to be eligible for peer tutoring services.
• You must be able to meet with your tutor in the Academic Success Center for tutoring sessions regularly throughout the semester (at agreed upon times).
• The amount of tutoring hours you are allowed must not exceed the amount of contact hours in the class you are requesting tutoring services.
• Be aware that tutoring services are for your assistance in coursework.  Peer tutors are not allowed to complete your homework or other formal assignments for you.
